No connection between university and companies
Thinking on job issues, I suppose there are two complementary trends at the moment:
– companies that think universities forge professionals straight away;
– old teaching methods and less practical lessons at the university.
The fact is that in Italy we are great at reading and studying one, two, three, four books for each exam. Plus all correlated articles that we can find through the web. But this is not enough. We should study and do practice. University must introduce practical, functional and relevant labs. University must give the right tools for not being a permanent or temporary unemployed person.
On the other side there are companies that expect to find one single person with years work experience, one single person that is designer, psychologist, illustrator, communicator, developer, English speaker and obviously young at the same time. Wow! This is crazy. And bad, because the salary is for one person and not for a team.
I also heard of students that had the possibility to do internship at good companies. After having suffered during the selection process, they were abandoned at their desk in the office without no one in charge for months and no schedule. And when a tutor came, the tutor disappeared after a few days.
The situation must change by changing the attitude. And the law. Last steps in postgraduate education should be delegated to university or to companies. Please decide whom.
Students need to learn from the companies. Companies must stop looking for just experienced employees and should shape new starters and hire the most valuable resources. And please, stop demanding experience if no company is available to help young people to grow.
Companies and agencies, find good people. Not machines.
